Rome E-Bike Tours — Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is an e-bike and how does it work?

An e-bike (electric bicycle) is a standard bicycle with an integrated electric motor that assists your pedalling. You still pedal as normal — the motor simply multiplies your effort, making hills effortless and long distances comfortable. Our fleet includes full-suspension e-mountain bikes (ideal for the Appian Way’s mixed terrain) and step-through comfort e-bikes. Every bike has multiple assist levels so you can dial in as much or as little help as you like — you can even switch the assist off entirely and ride on pure leg power if you prefer.

2. Do I need cycling experience or special fitness to join?

No special fitness is required. The electric assist does the hard work, making our tours accessible to a wide range of ages and fitness levels. That said, a few things are worth knowing by tour type:

  • City tours (Hidden Rome, Sunrise, Night Tour): flat to gently hilly urban roads — suitable for anyone who can ride a bike.
  • Appian Way & Aqueducts (5h, ~28–30 km): mixed terrain including cobblestones, compacted dirt paths, and paved roads. Basic-to-good bike skills are recommended. Comfortable for a 55-year-old first-timer but more energetic than a city tour.

If you have any physical concerns, feel free to contact us before booking and we will advise honestly.

3. Who can join — age limits and family guests?

Our tours are suitable for a wide age range:

  • Children under 12: must ride with a parent in a cargo bike or on a trailer bike (included at no extra charge — just let us know when booking).
  • Ages 12 and above: can ride their own e-bike independently.
  • No upper age limit — many of our most enthusiastic riders are in their 60s, 70s, and 80s!
  • Minors must always be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Our tours are a genuine family favourite — teens in particular consistently rate the experience as a trip highlight.

4. How big are the groups?

We strictly cap group sizes to maintain a genuine small-group experience:

  • City tours (Hidden Rome, Sunrise, Night Tour, Private): maximum 8 guests per guide.
  • Appian Way & Aqueducts tour: maximum 10 guests per guide.
  • For groups larger than these limits, a second guide joins to maintain quality and safety.

Small groups mean more interaction with your guide, more flexibility at stops, and access to narrow streets and hidden spots that large tour buses cannot reach.

5. Where do the tours start? Are there different meeting points?

Yes — there are two main meeting points in Rome depending on the tour:

  • City tours (Hidden Rome, Sunrise, Rome by Night, Private Tour): ESBike Roma, Via Antonio Rosmini 22, Rome — easily reachable from the Circus Maximus / Aventine area.
  • Appian Way & Aqueducts Tour: Via Marco Aurelio 30a, Rome — a short walk from the Colosseum.

Full meeting-point details and a Google Maps link are included in your booking confirmation. Guides arrive 10–15 minutes early with a clearly visible EsBike sign. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before departure for bike fitting and orientation.

6. Can dietary requirements and food allergies be accommodated?

Yes. We accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and other common dietary requirements or allergies. Please clearly specify your needs in the comments field at the time of booking — this gives your guide time to prepare the right alternatives. If you have a severe allergy, we also recommend contacting us directly on WhatsApp before your tour so we can confirm arrangements.

7. What should I wear and bring?

A few simple guidelines:

  • Footwear: closed-toe shoes (trainers, sneakers — no flip-flops or open sandals).
  • Clothing: comfortable and weather-appropriate. Avoid very loose trousers that could catch in the chain. Layers are great in spring and autumn.
  • Summer essentials: sunscreen, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle.
  • Camera or phone: there are great photo opportunities at every stop.
  • Appian Way specifically: closed shoes with grip are important as the terrain includes cobblestones and compacted dirt paths.

Helmets are always provided — you do not need to bring your own.

8. What happens if it rains?

Rome’s climate means most showers are brief, and cycling in light rain can be a wonderful crowd-free experience. Our policy:

  • Light rain: tours run as normal. We provide full rain gear (ponchos/jackets) for all participants at no extra charge.
  • Heavy rain or dangerous conditions: we will reschedule or issue a full refund.
  • Our team monitors forecasts and will notify you by WhatsApp or email as early as possible — typically the evening before or morning of your tour.

9. What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour start time. Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance are non-refundable. To cancel or reschedule, contact us via WhatsApp or email with your booking reference. If EsBike Tours cancels due to weather or operational reasons, you will receive a full refund or a complimentary rebook.

10. Can I book a private tour for my family or group?

Absolutely. Private tours are available for any group size and are fully customisable — you choose the time slot, pace, neighbourhoods, and food stops. Private tours start from €299 for 2 people (4 hours). Ideal for couples, families, honeymoons, bachelor/bachelorette parties, corporate team-building, and special occasions. Contact us on WhatsApp or email to discuss your needs and receive a personalised quote.

11. Which is the best tour for first-time visitors to Rome?

It depends on your priorities — here is our guide:

  • Best overall introduction: Hidden Rome Street Food Tour — a 4-hour city loop covering Trastevere, Testaccio, Janiculum Hill, Campo de’ Fiori, and the Jewish Ghetto, with street food along the way.
  • Best for avoiding crowds and heat (summer): Sunrise Tour at 6:00 AM — Rome entirely to yourself, ending with breakfast at Sant’Eustachio il Caffè next to the Pantheon.
  • Best for atmosphere: Rome by Night – Food & Wine — the city illuminated, charcuterie and local wine mid-tour.
  • Best for nature, history, and adventure: Appian Way & Aqueducts — Rome’s countryside, ancient catacombs, and a spectacular UNESCO-listed natural park.

Many guests who book one tour end up booking a second during their stay — we consider that the best review of all.

12. How do you ensure rider safety during the tour?

Safety is built into every aspect of the experience:

  • All bikes are professionally inspected and maintained before every tour.
  • Helmets provided and fitting checked before departure.
  • Every guide conducts a safety briefing and bike orientation at the start.
  • Guides lead from the front; on larger tours a second guide takes the rear.
  • Routes use cycle lanes, parks, and quieter streets wherever possible.
  • Guides carry first-aid kits throughout.
  • All participants must follow the guide’s instructions during the ride.

13. Is there luggage storage at the meeting point?

Yes — we offer luggage storage at our meeting point, including large bags and suitcases. You are welcome to leave your luggage with us before and after the tour so you can ride comfortably without worrying about it. Just let us know when you arrive and our team will take care of it.

14. Do you offer hotel pick-up or drop-off?

Standard group tours meet at our fixed central meeting points and finish at the same or a nearby location. We do not offer individual hotel pick-up on standard tours. For private tours we are more flexible with departure points — contact us in advance to discuss your location in Rome.

15. Is this experience good for solo travellers?

Absolutely. A significant portion of our guests join as solo travellers. Our small-group format (max 8–10 people) makes it easy to connect with other travellers from around the world. The social, informal atmosphere — with food stops and shared experiences along the route — makes solo participation very comfortable. Multiple guests have described the EsBike tour as the best social experience of their entire Italy trip.
